Rock overpower Rush in first exhibition game

Nov 12, 2023

Saturday (Nov.11) night in Oakville, the Saskatchewan Rush lost 13-10 against the Toronto Rock in the first exhibition game of the season.

"There was a lot of good things in our game. I think at the same time that our third quarter wasn't very good. We want to play fast, but we also have to play smart and I think a couple of times we were out of control and we paid the price for it," said Head Coach Jimmy Quinlan.

Zach Manns and Cam Wengreniuk led the way on offence with two goals each, while all three goaltenders, Frank Scigliano, Laine Hruska and Thomas Kiazyk, got in the action. Scigliano allowed four goals in 30 minutes, Hruska allowed seven in the third quarter and Kiazyk had two slip past him in the fourth quarter.

"Once we moved Ryan Keenan and Robert Church out at half, I thought Wengreniuk found his range and got some goals. And again, Mike Triolo when he moves his feet and attacks with speed is a handful. The new guys that came in like Patrick Dodds were good, but we as coaches just have to find ways to get them in positions to have success," commented Quinlan.

The Rush held 4-2 and 6-5 leads at the TRAC, but the Rock offence that featured Tom Schreiber and Chris Boushy continuously found ways to respond throughout the contest.

Triolo, Keenan, Church, Nathaniel Kozevnikov, Jerrett Smith and Jake Bowen all added goals for Saskatchewan.

Keenan, Church, Mike Messenger, Holden Garlent and Frank Scigliano all took the second half off to let the young guys get more reps in.

The second pre-season game goes on November 25th in Moose Jaw.

Tickets are still available for that tilt against the Calgary Roughnecks.
